In and Out, In and Out

Today Betsy tried to run out the front door while my friend was walking outside. Luckily I caught her leash as she was just outside the door..but she still tried.
So tonight I propped open the screen door and we went in and out again and again. I wouldn't let her go out the door until I said "Betsy Okay". If she went out the door when I gave the command then we continued for a walk down the street and back. Filled with lots of praise of course!
But if she tried to walk out the door before I told her she could she went on tie down while I walked in and out of the house a few times.
Then we progressed to where I would stand outside the door and she wouldn't move until I came back inside and we went out together. And then we went on our little walk.
Needless to say after 30 minutes of letting cold air into the house, I think she figured it out..but we are going to keep practicing over the next few weeks to beat it into that hard head of hers!
Have you ever had problems with a puppy bolting out the door. If so how did you fix it?

I guess you could say that I am in such a habit of posting daily I just can't stop! I probably won't post daily, but I will definitely post more often than I did before.

Haha, I decided to do the same thing, or was in the habit of it anyway. As far as bolting goes, I have has a problem with my pet dog Marley bolting, and we just do lots of what you are doing, doing wait and lots of praise when they get it right, and going back a step or two when they dont. Good luck!

The only thing I would do differently is tell her "Let's Go" instead of "Okay." And if you're doing a stay at the door, then do a "Wait," but it sounds like you're on the right track - keep up the good work and she'll be a great little girl!

Keep on doing what you're doing. Threshold respect is always very high on my list of things I work on with a puppy. One of the things you can do is just put her in a sit, no wait or stay, and walk through the door and turn and face her. You start out really close but if she tries to go through the door you just block her. Eventually she'll give up and realize she doesn't go through the door without you and without a command inviting her. Keep up the good work!
